Sri Lanka Showcases the Finest of Ceylon Tea in Nairobi to Mark International Tea Day 2026

The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Nairobi commemorated International Tea Day 2026 with a special event celebrating the rich heritage, exceptional quality, and global significance of Ceylon Tea on 21 May 2026. The event brought together members of the diplomatic corps, representatives from the tea and hospitality industries, and distinguished guests to experience Sri Lanka’s world-renowned tea culture and traditions.

Welcoming the guests, Ms. Ruvini De Silva, Acting High Commissioner of Sri Lanka in Nairobi, highlighted the importance of International Tea Day and underscored the significant role played by the tea industry in Sri Lanka’s economy, culture, and national identity. She emphasized that Ceylon Tea continues to enjoy global recognition for its exceptional quality, distinctive flavor profiles, rich aroma, and authenticity, cultivated across Sri Lanka’s unique agro-climatic regions.

A key highlight of the programme was the dissemination of messages from the Hon. Minister of Plantation and Community Infrastructure of Sri Lanka and the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Tea Board, reaffirming Sri Lanka’s continued commitment to preserving the excellence, sustainability, and global competitiveness of Ceylon Tea while strengthening international partnerships within the tea sector.

Guests were also presented with an informative presentation of the Sri Lanka Tea Board, showcasing the history, heritage, and global standing of Ceylon Tea. Adding a vibrant cultural dimension to the celebration, Ms. Hirundi Vithanage captivated the audience with a graceful dance performance to the popular song “Udarata Kandukara,” which pays tribute to the hardworking women tea pluckers of Sri Lanka’s hill country whose invaluable contribution has played a vital role in sustaining the country’s tea industry and strengthening the national economy.

The celebration concluded with an exclusive tea tasting session featuring seven regional varieties of Ceylon Tea, allowing guests to experience the distinct flavors, aromas, and characteristics unique to Sri Lanka’s renowned tea-growing regions. The tea tasting was accompanied by carefully curated refreshments, providing attendees with an authentic Sri Lankan hospitality experience.

The event served as an important platform to promote Ceylon Tea in Kenya and the broader East African region while strengthening partnerships with diplomatic, commercial, and industry stakeholders. The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Nairobi remains committed to enhancing awareness and appreciation of Ceylon Tea internationally and fostering stronger trade and cultural ties through such initiatives.
